Key Takeaways
- IT offers diverse career paths far beyond traditional developer roles
- Steep learning curves and continuous development shape day-to-day work
- Flexible working models enable individual life and career planning
- The work environment is crucial for long-term development and satisfaction
- Company culture, transparency and collaboration determine how potential becomes visible
What actually influences job satisfaction the most? In IT, it becomes particularly clear that it is not just the role or area of responsibility that matters, but above all the conditions in which development takes place. As great as the opportunities in IT are, the environment strongly shapes how they are actually used. Transparent communication, clear development perspectives and collaboration on equal footing influence how people perceive their role and continue to grow.
Company culture manifests itself in everyday life. In the way decisions are made, how feedback is given and how visible development opportunities are. Only when these conditions are right can skills grow and potential become visible.
Why Benefits Are More Than Perks
Even as the job market changes, expectations of good employers remain high. When choosing a job, it is not just the tasks and technologies that matter, but above all the conditions under which work takes place.
Benefits have long been an important factor for satisfaction, development and long-term prospects. This is also shown by a survey from the kununu ZukunftsPanorama. Particularly in demand are flexible working hours and home office at 55%, health promotion at 43%, and training and development opportunities at 38%. What is particularly important to employees can be summarised in five key areas:
- Flexible working models — Home office, hybrid models and flexible working hours
- Training and development — Professional training, personal development and coaching
- Health and balance — Programmes to promote well-being and long-term performance
- Team culture and collaboration — Day-to-day exchange, team events and shared activities
- Transparency and development prospects — Clear opportunities for advancement and open communication
How Development Is Lived at Evolit
An expert in the area of benefits is Stefanie Stocker. She has been part of Evolit since 2017 and now works in the HR department. She originally started in office management before developing internally and completing HR training that was supported by Evolit.
Today she is responsible for HR topics and works closely on issues relating to recruiting, company culture and employee development. Through her development within the company, she is familiar with both operational processes and strategic issues in human resources.
What she finds particularly formative is the dynamism of the IT industry and the opportunity to actively contribute to the development of structures and frameworks.
Evolit: How did you get into the IT industry?
Stefanie: Honestly, it was quite accidental. After graduating, I didn’t focus strongly on any particular industry. Evolit was simply an exciting opportunity. What then convinced me to stay was above all the environment. IT is incredibly dynamic — you are constantly learning and working with many different people and topics. In HR especially, it’s exciting because you are very close to the development of the industry.
Evolit: You developed internally from office management to HR. How did you experience this path?
Stefanie: For me, it was a very valuable experience. I realised that I wanted to develop further and move more into the HR area. What I particularly appreciated was that this wish was taken seriously and actively supported. I had the opportunity to complete the appropriate training and develop step by step into the new role. I was not only supported professionally, but was also regularly encouraged in everyday work to take on new tasks and responsibility. For me, this clearly shows that development here is not just a buzzword, but is actually lived.
Evolit: You have been working in HR at Evolit for several years. What changes have you noticed in the IT industry, particularly in recruiting and among applicants?
Stefanie: In recent years, recruiting in IT has changed enormously. The market has become much more competitive — good candidates can often choose their jobs. At the same time, expectations have also changed. Topics like flexibility, meaningful work and company culture have become much more important. What I particularly notice: the recruiting process needs to be faster, more transparent and more personal. Active sourcing and employer branding have also become significantly more important. You no longer wait for applications, but actively approach talent.
Evolit: You mentioned employer branding — what is particularly important to you and how do you implement it at Evolit?
Stefanie: For me, the most important thing about employer branding is that it is authentic. What we communicate externally must also be experienced in everyday life. At Evolit, we try to implement exactly that by providing insights into our way of working and showing how collaboration actually functions. This includes transparent development opportunities, flexible working models and offers that truly support everyday working life — for example in the areas of training, coaching or health. It is also important that we don’t just talk about culture, but actively live it. This shows in daily interactions, in communication and in how we enable development.
Evolit: What role does company culture play when it comes to attracting people to IT and retaining them long-term?
Stefanie: From my perspective, company culture is a decisive factor. An open, appreciative culture ensures that everyone feels comfortable and can contribute their strengths. It is important that development opportunities are realistic and transparent. Culture is not shown in buzzwords, but in daily interactions.
Evolit: What makes Evolit an environment where people can develop well and stay long-term?
Stefanie: What I particularly value about Evolit is the very open and supportive atmosphere. People work on equal footing here and individual development is truly encouraged. I myself had the opportunity to develop from office management into HR. This shows that potential is recognised and supported.
Evolit: What advice would you give to people who are considering going into IT but are still unsure?
Stefanie: I would say: just try it and don’t rule yourself out too early. You don’t have to know everything from the start. IT offers an enormous variety of opportunities, also beyond traditional programming. Often you only discover what truly suits you by doing it.
Evolit: Looking to the future: what would need to change so that more diversity naturally becomes part of IT?
Stefanie: I believe there needs to be a continued rethinking, both in companies and in society. More visibility, fewer stereotypical images and a stronger focus on potential rather than perfect CVs would be important steps. In the long term, it should be self-evident that diversity is part of the picture.
